PHOTO PROMPT © Jeff Arnold
As I sprawled on a deck chair under a parasol, taking in the sun, a ten-year-old came running to me “up for a challenge?”, he squeaked.
The chessboard was set. He played his move, a pawn forward. My knight moved next. The game went on for about twenty minutes. I kept capturing his pawns and rooks. Taking a sip of my beer, I exclaimed: “check!” He played his move. With a smirk, I tried to move my queen ahead. Suddenly I felt, my entire body was on fire. I jumped off the chair and dived into the pool.
He hissed in a whisper “CheckMate!”
This story is written for Friday Fictioneer hosted by Rochelle.
A ten year old with some serious chess skills – and perhaps some other more sinister talents.

Not the vacation he was expecting. He certainly didn’t think he would be burned by a 10-year old. Nicely done.

Was actual part of the game was to make you jump into the pool? That was the actual game, wasn’t it?

For the kid, maybe. Probably he was testing what all he was capable of.
Thank you, Abhijit.
