The Three Mistakes

Hearing a rasping sound on my door, I left my warm blanket and checked the time. It was 1 A.M.

Who could it be? Peering through the spy-hole, I saw a silhouette. I should have been scared but my soporific brain couldn’t process and I opened the door which was my first mistake of that fateful night.

When I opened the door, I did not see anyone. I wondered if I was dreaming or my brain was playing games with me. “Come in”, I said sarcastically. It was my second mistake of the night.

Closing the door, I went to the kitchen to drink water. My throat was parched. I filled the glass with water. I noticed the water in the glass slowly turned red. I opened my mouth to scream, but no sound came out of my mouth. Have I gone dumb? I dropped the glass. Did I hear the sound of the shattering glass? Am I deaf, now? And that’s when I made my last mistake, I turned around. I saw a shadow behind me, holding my glass.

I don’t remember what happened after that. When I woke up, I was holding a glass in my hand, with red liquid. The shadow next to me whispered “You were thirsty. Bottoms up, your welcome drink. Cheers!”

  1. Hmm interesting. What is it exactly that makes vampires so scary? Is it the change we fear? Is being assimilated in to the culture of our attackers the worst thing that could happen? As an individual, may be not.

It is certainly the most frightening thing for a community because then people start turning against their own.

Superb story Priya. Sorry for the long rant. Just thinking out loud.

    1. Thank you, Kanika. Vampire is a possibility. I will be writing a sequel for this. Hope you will like the explanation.
Vampire is a perfect combination of glamour and spooky.
