Her Eyes

“A chip chocolate cone please.”

Smiling I make her cone and give it to her. And that’s when I see those blue eyes. How can it be?

She stretches her hand to give me the money, but I stand frozen. Putting the cash on the table, she returns to her booth.

All of a sudden I’m transported to the past. I find myself at a cafe miles away, a decade ago, when I saw those eyes for the very first time.

I was having a milkshake with my friends, Akash and Amar when she entered the cafe. Her freckled face was hidden by a scarf. She sat at the booth next to ours. I looked at her and smiled. She did not smile back, she just stared back. Her eyes made me uncomfortable. Looking at Akash, she nodded. And then the unthinkable happened. She pulled out the gun and shot Amar, point blank. She bolted immediately before we could do anything. I fainted. When I woke up I was told that Amar didn’t survive.

I had forgotten the minute details.

With a jolt, I’m back to present. Today, as I see her eyes, everything is crystal clear. Truth never dies. Without wasting any time, I go to the pantry and make a call to the police. Quickly I come back to the counter and announce “It’s my birthday. Ice Cream for everyone. On the house!” Amidst the crowd-cheering, I make a call to my husband, Akash.

      1. I don’t know. she seems to have done so for years. And it was always there in her subconscious brain. perhaps she was in denial. was seeing the accomplice too much for her. Did it frighten her in to thinking it would happen again, and this time she could be the victim, and therefore could not be put away in the past?
