Ablution

It is not easy, to come here again. I gently step down the stairs, thinking it is going to be the last time. But then I come here thinking this every single time.

Have you ever sat inside a confession box at a church, worrying if the priest would judge you? Do you think he doesn’t judge you? He is human, of course, he judges you. All of us fall short of the promise. Forget others, I judge myself too, all the time. I fall short of being someone ‘I aspire to be’. It is a constant struggle.

As I take another step towards the river, I hear the gurgling of the stream, it is so welcoming, nature is welcoming.

What do I need to absolve myself of? Sins and crimes? One and many? What is sin? How do we know? Is it ok to kill a mosquito and not ok to kill a human?  Your soul carries the sin; It is irrelevant whether your mind does or not.

Does God forgive a fallen soul? God will. But will we forgive ourselves, of the petty and the grave sins that we commit? In the grand scheme of the universe, our sins are inconsequential, however, to our small conscience, they are a huge load.

This is my final ablution- I need to purify my body, mind and cleanse my soul for the last time. And as the quote goes  ‘May God have mercy on my soul’.

Amen!

  1. No one can forgive us if we don’t forgive ourselves. Hope the final ablution doesn’t mean she is going to do something silly as drowning herself in the stream.

  2. geekanika says:

That doesn’t bode well. hope she changes her mind. what’s done can’t be undone, but the way forward can be one of hope and redemption. nice one Priya.

  3. shravmusings says:

Nice one Priya. But I just hope she changes her mind. I just hope that she will come out stronger post this ablution.

  4. Nobbinmaug says:

I’ve often wondered what makes our lives more important than insect lives? In the grand scheme of things, are we more important? To (decent) humans, human lives are important. I’m sure to mosquitoes, mosquito lives are more important than humans. I like deep, philosophical discussions. Nice work.

    • Priya says:

That is a befitting reply. To mosquitos, their life I more important than a human.
Thank you, Nobbin. I am glad that you liked it.
